Dungeons & Dragons Online Newbie Series: Creating a Human Paladin

Edit This Entry

NameNewbie Series: Creating a Human Paladin
CategoryClass
This is the seventh character build in Skryer's "DDO Newbie Series". This guide aims to help new players enjoy the game by building their 28-pt build toons without the headache. You won't have to worry about messing up your stats and skill points. The builds featured in the series are not created to be the uber toons in the game. Save such builds when you get your 1750 favor and unlock your 32-pt builds. The main point of this guide is to help you create a character based on the class of your choice and have tons of fun playing.

In the current state of the DDO classes, Paladins are getting some beating because the developers are not giving them much attention. Back when the level cap is 12, Paladins didn't have much problems and the properly built ones are actually dealing damage. When the level cap increased, the level progression for Paladins became a bit of a joke, with no substantial additions to their abilities. The poorly built Paladins took much of the brunt, but the good ones also suffered because they can't just keep up with other melee types.

It's important to know that Paladins usually play supporting roles. It's seldom you see a Paladin play the main tank because they just can't get their damage stats high enough to be at par with fighters and barbarians. The problem lies in the fact that Paladins need to balance the assignment of points to several abilities. This means They can't max out their Strength because other ability scores will suffer and render the Paladin ineffective in something they are known to be good at. At times, Paladins are considered a class that is not quite a tank and not quite a cleric. There's just no specific role that Paladins can call their own. But this doesn't mean you will give up playing Paladins. They can still be very useful in a group as secondary front-line combatants. Besides, other party members would want a paladin just because of the special auras they have. Just standing next to a paladin can give extra points to AC.

The recommended attributes for a Paladin are Charisma, Strength, Wisdom, and Constitution. Putting points in Strength (damage) and Constitution (hitpoints) are quite obvious, while Charisma is needed for the Lay on Hands. The higher the Charisma, the more hitpoints recovered for every usage of Lay on Hands. Wisdom is for the spell points and the effectiveness of the spells. With a 32-pt build, it's less difficult to spread the points to the abilities. For a 28-pt build, it's going to be tricky. You will end up with a relatively lower Charsima or Wisdom. You really don't want to lower your Strength and Constitution too much.

========

Notes:

1. Choice of Human is for the extra Feat and the exta skill points each level.

2. A good AC can be obtained by having the following:

10: Base
13: +5 Fullplate
01: Dexterity (8 base, +4 item)
07: +5 Heavy Shield
02: Chaosgarde (Xorian Cipher)
05: Protection +5
02: Ring of Balance (Invaders token collecticble trade-in)
04: Paladin Aura
44: Total

3. Base Saves. (Adjust accordingly if you get a +5 Resistance Item, Greater Heroism +4, Prayer +2.

Fortitude: 23
Reflex: 15
Will: 17

4. Paladins are good in one hand-weapon fighting. With a good AC, he can easily swtich to two-weapon fighting an deal decent damage which can yield +21 with Divine Favor and Prayer.

5. Getting enhancements for Constitution can bring up hitpoints to 280 without any items yet. Minos Legens helm (toughness feat) and a +6 Con item, plust the Toughness feat can easily get your hitpoints to more than 300.

6. A Paladin can easily heal fallen party members by using wands and the Lay On Hands. With this build, there will be total of 3 lay on hands which can be as good as a Heal Scroll.

7. This particular Paladin build is quite versatile because your character can melee and heal. It's a great support for when the hitpoints of tanks start dropping fast.

8. If you want laid back meleeing mixed with healing, Paladins can be fun to play. But if you want hardcore tanking, you may want to roll a Barbarian or Fighter, then are more effective in the melee department. But then again, who knows what's in store for Paladins in the coming Modules. There might be some major changes or substantial additions. So, just hold on to your existing Paladins or start making one for future use.
