Dungeons & Dragons Online Guide to Clickies: Making Your Character Self-Sufficient

Edit This Entry

NameGuide to Clickies: Making Your Character Self-Sufficient
CategoryGeneral
DDO has been adding new content every two or three months, and with each update, monsters become tougher and meaner, causing people to rethink their tank builds. In addition, it has gotten to a point where clerics use up more resources to keep people in the party alive. If you care about your clerics, you would want to be more self-sufficient when running quests. Self-sufficiency means stocking up with potions and wands so that when you need some buffing and healing, you can do it by yourself and not depend solely on the healers.

But let's face it, potions don't come cheap. They can go as high as 900 gp per pot. Stocking up 100 of each type of potions can make you poor very fast. This is why players should be made aware of the importance of "clickies". A clickie is an item that when activated casts a certain spell depending on the clickie type you have. So, if you are a pure fighter, barbarian, or rogue, you will be able to cast spells even without spell points.

As a clickie functions like a spell, you can cast a buff, do crowd control, or even nuke some monsters. If you happen to be a caster, a cleric, a bard or a ranger and you ran out of spell points in a critical area of the quest, the clickies can come in handy. It is like an emergency kit or a first aid kit that you can utilize when you are in dire need of help. Now, you don't need to spend plat to get these clickies because they are found in chests at all levels and sometimes they are offered by NPCs as quest end rewards. There are those that are more desirable than the others, but still you get to choose those that will help you be more self-sufficient.

So, how do clickies work, you might ask. First of all, you have to know what it looks like and how to use it. A clickie is usually an item with a number at the bottom right corner of the icon. This number represents the number of charges of the spell. It can range be from 1 charge to 5 charges. Of course, the more charges, the better. The items can be boots, robes, armors, scepters, belts, cloaks, bracers, necklaces, helmets, or goggles. So basically, it can be any item.

To use a clickie, you need to equip it, then put it to your hotbar, and then press the appropriate key to activate it. It's just really like using a spell. However, it will only last depending on the number of charges. When you've used up all the charges, you can get them back by resting in the shrine or wait in the tavern for the charges to reset. Although clickies are very useful, the duration of the spells is short. It can last from 30 seconds to 6 minutes. It's very important to remember to switch back to the original item you have on. Use the clickie only when necessary.

Now that you have an idea of what clickies are, here is a list of known clickies in the game. There might be more, but what's listed here are those that have been actually found in the game. If anything is amiss, do let me know and I will add it to the list. The clickies are divided into four groups: Buff Clickies, Crowd Control Clickies, Offensive Clickies and Special Clickies.

BUFF CLICKIES

Buff clickies are those that give out temporary buffs. It can be resistance to elements (fire, acid, cold, electricity), immunity to some damage, resistance or protection to particular spells, or buffs that improve your ability stats. A sub-group would be those that remove certain effects of spells.

Bless

Bless not only improves your attack rolls and saves, it also removes the effects caused by bane spell. As with the actual Bless spell, the effect of this clickie does not stack with the Bard song (Inspre Courage). The latter has more bonus and cannot be dispelled. So, you are better off with a bard song which lasts a little bit longer.

Divine Favor and Divine Power

Tanks usually use Divine Favor in conjunction with Divine Power to increase their bonuses to luck, which in turn improves their fighting abilities. Divine Power gives a +6 to strength, which can be very useful when fighting named bosses or tough creatures that need to die fast! What's more, it gives temporary hitpoints (7 hitpoints, I believe). As these clickies last for one minute, it's best to use them at end fights.

Heroism (or Greater Heroism - see also Planar Gird)

We all know that Heroism gives a +2 to attack, saves, and skill checks. As such, tanks usually ask for them at low levels. At higher levels, they ask fro Greater Heroism, which gives +4 on attacks, saves, and skill checks. They last more than a minute, so they are really being farmed by non-spellcasters. Imagine the spell points savings your casters will get if all tanks have these clickies.

Shield

Spellcasters can use shield on themselves, which not only gives +4 to AC, but also makes them immune to magic missiles or force missiles. However, this can only be casted on one's self. So that leaves non-casters with the option of buying potions for themselves. But let's face it, non-casters would rather buy haste and rage potions than shield. That's why a shield clickie is a wonderful thing to have. If you have done Proof in the Poison quest, you will now the importance of the Shield spell or clickie. If you haven't, then make sure you are ready to fight creatures that cast magic missiles as if they have unlimited spell points.

Protection From Evil

Notice how clerics include Protection from Evil in their list of mass buffs? Well, as many creatures are evil, Protection from Evil will help you gain +2 on saves against evil. It even makes you immune to domination by vampires in necropolis quests. While this isn't really a spell that players ask for, you will realize the importance of the spell or the clickie when you run quests in the necropolis. In case there is no cleric in the group, you can still enjoy the benefits of the spell by using a clickie.

Haste

Ah, this has got to be the most popular clickie in the list. Well, for tanks, that is. It not only makes you move faster, it also gives you more AC and makes you attack faster. Haste potions aren't really expensive, but if you are addicted to it, prepare to spend thousands of plat just to keep yourself hasted in quests. The potion lasts only for 30 seconds. The clickie lasts for 30 seconds as well, but they can reset after using a shrine. And best of all, you can have as many of these clickies and use them all in the quest. Some haste clickies have area of effect, which means that your party members can enjoy the benefits of a 30-second haste. That's not bad at all.

Rage

Barbarians love rage, especially those that lasts longer than the rage they have on (feat). Rage gives +2 Strength and +2 constitution, but lowers your AC by 2. What's good about this spell is that it stacks with Ram's Might and Bull's Strength. Other tanks love rage as well, so the rage clickie is important to them, almost as much as the haste clickie.

Prayer

Truth be told, not everyone realizes the power of Prayer. What it does is give a +1 boost to your allies, while giving -1 to your enemies. This is very much needed when the party is being mobbed and overwhelmed by different creatures.

Aid

This spell temporarily increases hitpoints. The effect lasts until the duration of the spell ends, or when the temporary hitpoints are used up (when you get hit). Aside from the temporary life, it alsi gives out Bless. There's really little need for this clickie since clerics cast them always. However, when there's no cleric around, it can be very useful. Note that Aid does not get rid of Bane Spell, despite having a Bless component in it.

Shield of Faith

This spell gives out a deflection bonus to AC. This proved to be very useful in low levels but seldom do you see clerics cast it as part of their mass buffs. Perhaps because at high levels, a lot of characters have a deflection item equipped, which bypasses the effect of the spell. But still, having a clickie of it sure won't hurt.

False Life

As the name implies, it gives additional hitpoints, which stack with Aid, Greater Heroism, and Divine Power. Squishies (or those with lower than 200 hit points) can benefit greatly with this clickie. It gives them a higher chance of survival, or at least keep them alive longer than expected, especially in raids.

Expeditious Retreat

This is similar to Haste, in that it makes you move faster. However, it only makes your movement 25% faster. It's just like having a 25% striding boots. But the beauty of this spell is that there is no level requirement, unlike striding boots. Casters can get this spell at level 1. The duration of the spell lasts depending on the level, but the clickie only lasts for one minute. It's not much, but if you need to run away from creatures, this should be very useful.

Bear's Endurance

Gives +4 increase to Constitution for three minutes. This means additional hitpoints and that can only be a good thing! However, it does not stack with a +4 or better item.

Fox's Cunning

Gives +4 increase to Intelligence for three minutes. This is particularly useful when rogues can't find trap boxes even if they have already activated their boosts. However, it does not stack with a +4 or better item.

Cat's Grace

Gives +4 increase to Dexterity for three minutes. This is particularly useful when you want to boost your dexterity while using bows and crossbows. Or even if you are dual-wielding and using weapon finese. However, it does not stack with a +4 or better item.

Eagle's Splendor

Gives +4 increase to Charisma for three minutes. This is particularly useful to Sorcerers and Bards, or even Clerics. However, it does not stack with a +4 or better item.

Bull's Strength

Gives +4 increase to Strength for three minutes. This is particularly useful at low levels to boost power. However, it does not stack with a +4 or better item.

Remove Paralysis

Perhaps one of the more underrated spell in the game is Remove Paralysis. This is actually useful if you want to help your party member who has been victimized by hold person. Hold person can last quite a while and sometimes, they die fast because of being helpless. Using a clickie can stop this from happening.

Lesser Restoration

This is a personal favorite. Lesser restoration gets rid of stat ability damage, exhaustion, and touch of idiocy. It takes several lesser restorations before you can remove ability damage,
so you are lucky if you get the one with 5 charges. It saves you a lot on potions. Of course, if you have negative levels, you can't do much, and you will really need to ask for a Cleric's help. But having this clickie will help your clerics save mana and wands.

Neutralise Poison

This spell has dual purpose. One is to remove poison and the other is to give party members immunity to poison spell. This clickie is useful to those that have no poison immunity item. And if you have low save on poisons, you better keep this clickie handy because you are bound to get constitution damage. If you don't have this, then make sure you carry the Lesser Restoration clickie.

Remove Curse

Sure the curse party hat looks nice, but they do give -2 on attacks and saves. So it can really be a pain. Clerics usually get rid of the curses but if you really want to help your cleric save mana, you will buy pots or have this clickie in your bag. In low- to mid level quests on elite, shamans usually spam cast curse spell, so better have remove curse clickies with you.

Remove Blindness

Being blind in the middle of a heated battle is not a good thing. You can end up dying fast. Even if you scream for help, the cleric may not be quick at casting a remove blindness spell because he is casting heal spells on other party members. Having a remove blindness clickie will make your life much easier.

Detect Secret Doors

This is not really a buff spell. It gives you the ability to detect or locate hidden doors. This is very useful if you do not have a rogue in the quest or the rogue does not have a high enough search skill.

OFFENSIVE CLICKIES

Clickies are not just for buffing. They can also be used to attack creatures. However, the effects of the spells/clickies are not as powerful as the one casted by wizards or sorcerers. But it can be a good substitute for wands, in case you ran out of them.

Magic Missiles

One or 3 charges of Magic Missiles may not be very useful, but think of a situation where tanks are dead and you ran out of spell points and wands and you need just magic missile to kill the creature. Then this clickie can make a big difference. Of course, that situation rarely happens. But you can see how it can be useful.

CROWD CONTROL CLICKIES

Tanks can be their own crowd control specialist by making use of clickies that slows down creatures. But that does not mean that only tanks use these clickies. Believe it or not, casters use these clickies to save up on spell points, scrolls and wands. Even if the spell effects don't last long enough, they can still make a huge difference and it helps avoid nasty party wipes.

Ray of Exhaustion

This particular spell is one you can call a debuff. This is very useful on creatures with no spell resistance. What it does is to lower the strength of the target which means less damage to you when they hit.

Grease

This has got to be the most fun clickie of all. It not only causes party members to fall, it also affects the enemies. The funny part is that grease is almost always used on party members only and never on enemies. It's mostly used for that purpose alone. In fact, players collect grease clickies just to use it on party members, nothing more.

Solid Fog

This is probably the most utilized crowd control clickie in the game. It conjures up a fog that slows down creatures. The enemies have a hard time getting out of this area, which makes them extra vulnerable to powerful spells such as firewall or cloud kill. The most common are those with 3 charges. The duration does not last very long, but it last long enough to kill the enemies with a maximized firewall.

Web

Just like Solid Fog, Web is a very useful crowd control spell. Creatures get stuck in the web which prevents them from attacking or casting any spell. They can only break free if they make a successful save based on their strength. This is very useful in low levels, but at higher levels, it can be quite useless since it has a low difficulty check.

Touch of Idiocy

Not everyone is aware of the spell called Touch of Idiocy. What it does is to lower the mental faculties of the enemies, which makes them unable to cast spells. Enemies with no spell resistance are particularly vulnerable to this spell.

SPECIAL CLICKIES or NAMED CLICKIES

Planar Gird

This gives out Greater Heroism. Everyone knows that Greater Heroism gives a whopping +4 to attack, saves, and skill checks. What's more, it gives temporary hitpoints and immunity to fear. As it gives temporary hitpoints, incapacitated comrades can be revives with just one click. This clickie can be found in the House Jorasco quest called Xorian Cipher. May people run the quest many times to farm for the Planar Gird. Unfortunately, it only has 1 charge, but then it lasts for 6 minutes, so it's not bad at all.

Visor of the Flesh Render Guards

Also known as the Deathward Clickie. This clickie is offered as an end reward item in the Tangleroot chain of quests (although it doesn't appear every time you run the quest). It protects one from the negative energy spell. This helps when you are fighting creatures that cast negative spells.

Ring of the Ancestors

This clickie enables anyone to raise dead, hence it became more popularly known as the Raise Dead clickie. It is a named item found in the quest Slavers of the Shrieking Mines. It has only 1 charge, but hey, it still means there's one dead player brought to life. This is mostly used on dead clerics. Players farm the said quest just to get this clickie. In the past, it takes many many runs to get one, but lately it has been dropping more often. This is a very handy clickie, especially if you need to recover from an "almost" party wipe.

Spell Storing Ring

This clickie allows one to restore a total of 75 spell points. It has 3 charges at 25 spell points each. This is very useful when you ran out of spell points and you have already used the shrine and the cleric has already given you all his DVs. It can be found in Menechtarun Desert in the area where the named mummy spawn.

Summon Monster

This spell allows you to call up a monster ally to help fight side by side with you. It has its own AI and as such, it cannot be controlled. If will attack party members only when you leave the instance. You can get this clickie from the threnal quest chain as end reward.

Staff of the Seer

This gives out True Seeing buff. True Seeing gives you the ability to see through invisibility and displacement. Think of those displaced Hobgoblins in Cabal for One, and you will see how important this spell is. The clickie can be found in the quest "Bring Me The Head of Ghola Fan".

Madstone Rage

This is the boots clickie that drops in the Reaver raid end chest. If you activate it, you gain a +4 to Strength, constitution and natural armor class. What's great about this is it stack with rage and items, which really improves your overall strength and constitution stats. Downside is you will not be able to cast spells or use wands, scrolls and clickies when you are in rage mode. Hence, this clickie may not be useful for casters.

These are just some of the more popular clickies being used in the game. Not everyone has realized the importance of the clickies in the game. It is not just being able to do things you thought were impossible given your class, but it also helps you become more self-sufficient. Being self-sufficient not only helps you survive longer, you also help clerics and casters save up on their spellpoints. Let's face it, you can be very unpopular if you keep asking for buffs that you can buy or get clickies off. Having no funds is not an excuse especially now that you know you can get clickies to substitute for potions, wands, and scrolls. It's fun to play with these clickies. Come on, even a grease clickie can turn a boring party into a blast! :)
