The third quest in the "Depths" series is The Depths of Discord. It's slightly more difficult than the two previous quests given that it is one level higher (level 5). In this quest, you will have to contend with fewer monsters but definitely much stonger ones. The most vicious of them all is the Large Earth Elemental named "Landslide". Landslide is venerated as a tribal god by the creatures that inhabit the area.
Your main objective is to explore the sewer and kill Landslide. It sounds easy enough but it can be a bit overwhelming if you are to do it on elite difficulty. Make sure you get the quest from Scholes of Vedykar over at the Hammersmith's Inn. Note that if you are not entering the sewer from the Depths of Darkness entrance, you can use the outside entrance just west of the Inn. You will find a Minotaur named Gorram standing next to the entrance. If you open your map, you will find the entrance marked by a gold chalice.
PREPARATION
You will be facing quite a number of monsters in this quest, which include: Ochre Jelly, Grey Ooze, Huge Violet Slime, Lesser Grey Ooze, Minotaur Berseker, Night Scorpion, Armored Wight, Black Wolf, Troll, Minotaur Warrior, Wraith, and Large Earth Elemental.
With many types of oozes in there, you need to bring your Muckbanes or cheap wooden weapons. You really don't want those oozes to damage your favorite weapons. Holy or Pure Good weapons work well with the Armored Wight and Ghost Touch weapons on the Wraith. The Night Scorpions can be a pain when they are bugged. They will follow you around but you can't hit them when they are bugged. When this happens, just continue to move around and go to an elevated area. To make them stay in place, you can use Web. Web also works on the Trolls and Minotaurs and Black Wolves. Be careful with the Black Wolves because they will trip you a lot and they do use Improved Trip. And you know what happens when you are knocked down. They will keep hitting you until your hitpoints drop so low.
You don't really need many buffs in this quest, but you cast Acid Resists to protect yourself from the oozes' acid attack. Crowd control spells that will work here are Web, Glitterdust, Hypnotism and Hypnotic Pattern (for Trolls, Minotaurs and Elementals). Firewall would be great to have for the Wraiths, but you need at least a level 6 Wizard in the party.
The quest is pretty straightforward. You just need to go to different sections of the sewers to turn valves. You can only proceed to the next section after you have turned the valve found in the previous section.
WALKTHROUGH
Upon entering, you will notice that there's only one way to go and that's to head down south. Just across from where you are standing, you will see a locked metal door. As you head to that direction, you will be able to target a Gray Ooze (CR: 3), but it won't actually show up until you get to the door. The Grey Ooze will come from the left side, while a Large Ochre Jelly will come attacking from the right side. After killing them, you can get the collectible in the alcove from the side where the Ochre Jelly appeared, or head east since you can't open the door just yet. You will then reach the water area where the path slopes downward. As you thread the waters, Lesser Gray Oozes (CR: 1) will attack you from behind. At the far end is a Huge Violet Slime (CR: 3) that's protecting the first valve which opens the metal door. Another Lesser Gray Ooze will attack, this time coming from up top. After you defeat the Violet Slime, turn the valve and head back to the now-opened door. Another pesky Lesser Gray Ooze will try to stop you as you make your way back to the top.
If you go past the door and travel further south, you will encounter a Minotaur Warrior (CR: 3) and a Minotaur Berserker. Once they sense your presence, they will charge, so there's a chance you will be knocked down. After you defeat them, try to lay some Web and Glitterdust and lead the Wolf (CR: 0.50) and a Black Wolf (CR: 1) to the crowd control. A Night Scorpion (CR: 3) is also hiding behind a secret door. The second wall will open up if you walk right into it and an Armored Wight will come attacking. You will then see another closed door and to the right is another sleeping Black Wolf. The valve that opens the door is on the west path.
There will be barrels and crates that seem to prevent you from moving forward. At the far end are a couple of Trolls (CR: 4) that will attack as soon as they see you. They are guarding the second valve that opens the next door. Head back and enter the now-opened door.
This time, you will see 2 sleeping Large Earth Elementals (CR: 4). As you're about to kill the 2nd Large Earth Elemental, two Medium Earth Elemental will come charging. Web can slow them down a bit and buy you some more time while you finish off the Large ones. Up ahead is the third door. To the right is a shrine.
Take the left hallway and you will again see the water area and the path slopes downward. Bring out your Ghost Touch weapons and prepare to fight 4 Wraiths (CR: 4). A named Wraith called "The Soulless Warrior" (CR: 4) who protects the valve will then appear. After you kill him, turn the valve and head back to the now-opened door. Note that it's much easier to fight them off the water.
Once you enter the door, you would have completed exploring the sewer. Up ahead is another locked door and behind it is Landslide (CR: 5) and 2 other Large Earth Elementals. Fight them to the doorway and make sure there's Web and Glitterdust to make the encounter a little less chaotic.
Theres a chest waiting for you and the entrance to the next and final quest in the Depths series, the Depths of Doom.
