Dungeons & Dragons Online Creating a Human Bard

Edit This Entry

NameCreating a Human Bard
CategoryClass
This is the fifth character build in Skryer's "DDO Newbie Series". This guide aims to help new players enjoy the game by building their 28-pt build toons without the headache. You won't have to worry about messing up your stats and skill points. The builds featured in the series are not created to be the uber toons in the game. Save such builds when you get your 1750 favor and unlock your 32-pt builds.

Bards are the most versatile class in the game. They can do most anything that other classes can only wish for. It is for this reason that the bards are known as the "jack of all trades, master of none". There's really nothing wrong with this because bards are primarily known as a support class. They can buff with spells such as blur, displacement, rage, good hope and haste, among other things.

One of the best buffs in the game are the sets of songs that bards get as a feat. Depending on the enhancements, a bard can give fighters a better attack, damage, and saves through Inspire Courage and Inspire Greatness. They can also boost skills of other party members through Inspire Competence. At mid-levels, bards can choose to specialize. They can be Bard Spellsinger, Bard Virtuoso, or Bard Warchanter. Each specialization has its own merits. It will depend mainly on how you want to play your bard. With a high Use Magic Device (UMD) skill, they can use any scrolls in the game, whether divine or arcane.

Bards are also known for their ability to use crowd control. They can use spells like hypnotize, charm, soundburst, and greater shout, among others. But the most effective crowd control for bards is their "Fascinate". When activated, this ability makes enemies stop and listen to the soothing sound of your song. It requires 3 ranks of the Perform skill to use. It has a save DC of your perform skill plus a d20. With a maxed Perform skill, mobs will have a hard resisting your songs.

At level 6, Bards can have the ability to fascinate undead with Bard Music of the Dead enhancement. It requires either Bard Extra Song IV or Bard Virtuoso I. At level 9, Bards can have the ability to fascinate constructs with Bard Music of Makers. It requires one of the following:

Bard Extra Song IV
Bard Virtuosp I
Warforged Construct Thinking III
Lesser Dragonmark of Making

Since Bards are versatile, you can also multi-class them depending on the direction you want your character to go. If you are keen on making your bard a melee-type, you can put more points to Strength. If you choose Dexterity over Strength, you can pick the Weapon Finesse and two-weapon fighting feats. There are really many builds you can think of for your bard. But of course, if you are new to the game, you would not want to create builds that will not work at higher levels. Stick to the basics and save the outrageous builds when you know the game inside out. Here is a build that can get you started in your adventure in Stormreach.
